Chronicle
Since 350 years owned by one family is a jubilee which is very seldom. In 1660 a.d. Johan Georg Mutschler built the oldest part of the property and operated a tavern. The positive development led to the application for the right to host and feed travellers., called the “Schildgerechtigkeit”, by the then operator Joist Heinrich Mutschler. After payment of 30 Gulden the right was granted by the palatine administration. In 1879 the then operator Johannes Mutschler married Anna Katharina Schmitt and so founded the relation to the present operators.
A changing history began that also influenced the development of the house. Since the establishment of the house its reputation was to be the best equipped tavern / hotel of Handschuhsheim. On the 20th of December 1768 a turkish prince with his entourage visited “Das Lamm Heidelberg”. A row of crowned heads followed the last of which was H.R.H. the crown prince of Burma who slept here on the 07th January of 2006. The last democratically elected “crowned head” was the President of the Federal Republic of Gernay Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Horst Köhler and his wife on the 16th of april 2010.
The ascent of Handschuhsheim to a tourist center was supported by the location on the transport axis Heidelberg – Frankfurt. In addition the close to nature location and the natural valley “Mühltal” increased its attraction. The growing gastronomy suffered a severe setback when the Main – Neckar – Railway was opened in 1846 and Handschuhsheim lost its position as a station. This and the activities of moonshiners reduced the gastronomy´s revenues by up to 50%. Many taverns had to be closed at that time. In the years between 1906 and 1909 the main road was moved from the Handschuhsheimer Landstrasse (right next corner) to the Rottmannstrasse (distance of about 200yds) which also was a blow for the local gastronomy which has been located along the Handschuhsheimer Landstraße. The incorporation of Handschuhsheim to Heidelberg in 1903 was the next blow. Up to now the city of Heidelberg neither makes any events in the local gastronomy nor hosts any guests here.
In 1981 the last bearer of the original name of the founders sold the house and emigrated to Canada. In 2004 the Dr. Fuhs Verwaltungs KG – relatives of the founder – bought the house. As the other historic monuments in our property Das Lamm Heidelberg was restored as it originally was constructed. Damages as the rotten carcass on the east side of the building were originally restored. The vaulted cellar of 16610 a.d. was restored in a unique manner and is today the only such cellar with a license for gastronomic use.
In 2009 the Das Lamm Heidelberg was awarded with the 4th star of the DEHOGA as the 3rd smallest within the area of application. This award reflects our commitment to remain the “gudd stubb of Hendesse”.
In February 2010 Johannes Fuhs passed his cook exams at the chamber of commerce of Rhein-Neckar. With this the future development of our house is secured.
